How to Choose the Perfect Running Track
Running is a great way to keep fit and clock in some outdoor time. Whether you’re training for a marathon or shaking off the workday’s stress, it’s important to choose the right track that can give you the best and safest experience possible.
Unfortunately, many running tracks in Philippine schools and sports arenas aren’t well maintained, posing a risk to a runner’s health and safety.
Here are the things any runner should look out for when choosing a running track.
1.) Choose flat, wide open spaces
Running may seem simple, but it requires physical and mental endurance and focus. We’ve all seen recreational runners close to busy intersections or in poorly-lit streets at night. Roadside runners also run the risk of injury from potholes and uneven sidewalks.
Choose flat, stable paths that are located in wide, open spaces, such as stadiums. It might take some time to get there, but the run will be worth it.
2.) Choose a place with some greenery
If you can’t find a wide open space, choose one surrounded by nature. On top of the clean air and great views, this study claims that close proximity to nature improves overall health and reduces anxiety and stress. This way, the health benefits you receive from running will increase exponentially, improving your physical and even emotional wellbeing.
3.) Choose a location with rest stops
When you’re running, especially during hot days, it’s important to stay hydrated and take breaks when you need them. Make sure the location you choose has a comfortable, shaded place where you can take a break and catch your breath when needed.
4.) Choose a path that benefits your running
One of the most important things to consider is the actual surface you’re running on. It shouldn’t be too soft like grass or dirt; nor should it be too hard, so you don’t hurt your ankles and knees. It should provide traction and grip, so you don’t stumble and fall.
One of our favorite running paths is in Po Kong Village in Hong Kong. This facility is installed with Rephouse’s Decoflex Athletic Track. This flooring system features a full depth polyurethane surface with wear coats, which ensures that the each section of the path is durable and even. Best of all, it has a 2-layer system that effectively absorbs impact from each individual step, reducing the tension in your legs, ankles and knees. This is the same system that was used at the Athens Olympics in 2004.
Finding the best and safest running track may take some time, but a good surface can spell a world of difference for you and your body.
