When you step on the seamless floor of a state-of-the-art gym, do you know what lies underneath?

It’s no secret that seamless sports flooring comes with many benefits. This high-quality, low-maintenance, and long-lasting option has advantages over traditional alternatives like hardwood, vinyl, linoleum, or plastic. It’s also recoatable and repairable, hence cost-effective. Seamless flooring rates high in safety due to its anti-slip surface, superb shock absorption, impact resistance, force reduction, and lower accident risk.

The innovative technology of seamless or “pad and pour” flooring is increasingly preferred by schools and organizations that plan to construct or renovate recreational facilities. “Pad and pour” refers to the installation process. Sealants and high-strength layers are poured over concealed rubber padding to create a monolithic surface. Aside from being safe, seamless sports flooring also enhances the overall experience of its users, thanks to quality of play, excellent ball rebound, and even noise abatement.

When you move across a seamless sports surface, you may not be aware of the technology that lies beneath your feet. Below is the hidden anatomy of the multi-layer Decoflex Universal Indoor Sports Flooring system, from top to bottom…

The multi-layer anatomy of Decoflex™ Universal Indoor Sports Flooring.

1. Aliphatic Polyurethane Topcoat

The visible surface is finished with a two-component aliphatic polyurethane topcoat which guarantees ease of maintenance and aesthetic longevity. Its chemical makeup features superb strength, protecting the floor from damage and degradation in the face of extreme heat, abrasion, moisture, heavy wear, and staining. It is weatherproof and heavy-duty enough for outdoor and industrial applications. The topcoat is pigmented and Decoflex comes in 12 eye-catching colors. After the topcoat dries, permanent game lines can be painted over it.

2. Self-Leveling Polyurethane Wear Coat

The two-component polyurethane wear coat is poured onsite to safeguard the entire system’s durability. It forms a level, smooth surface to support training sessions, tournaments, dances, assemblies, exams, and other heavy-traffic events. This 2mm layer works with the rubber padding underneath to create optimum playing conditions with excellent ball rebound and to distribute concentrated loads (point loads) across vast areas. This is critically important in balancing the forces exerted on the softer rubber base. This wear coat must be completed in one go without stopping. After it dries, it is sanded to remove imperfections.

3. Polyurethane Pore Sealer

This two-component layer seals all the pores in the rubber base mat to create the system’s truly seamless, level surface. Its chemical composition is formulated to bond perfectly to both the rubber underneath and the polyurethane wear coat above. The self-leveling sealer is carefully applied with trowels.

4. Rubber Base Mat

Many people who find themselves in an upgraded gymnasium may never know of its hidden rubber layer. The rubber base mat—which acts as a shock-absorbent cushion—comes prefabricated. It can be cut, arranged, aligned, and joined perfectly to fill the entire floor of any room. The pieces are combined, weighted down, and flattened by a heavy roller for a perfectly snug fit. Meanwhile, the minimal space between any seam or joint is filled with adhesive before the sealing layer is applied to smoothen everything out.

5. Polyurethane Adhesive

This two-part adhesive bonds the prefabricated rubber base mat to the interior’s concrete or asphalt substrate. It is applied with notched trowels to the substrate which must first be thoroughly examined and pre-treated. The concrete or asphalt substrate should be smooth, dry from moisture, and clear of all contaminants. Cracks and flaws are repaired before application of the adhesive, rubber base mat, and subsequent layers.
